Source: Music of the Avant Garde (1966-1973) fue una radical iniciativa empresarial y músical que define las actitudes editoriales experimentales de la década de 1960. Como magazine, no se limitaba a proporcionar información o meros puntos de vista sobre la nueva música: la mostraba en sí misma, incluyendo en algunos ejemplares vinilos con la musica presentada y poniendo de este modo al lector en contacto directo con "el entusiasmo, la provocación, la belleza, la audacia, el ingenio y perspicacia de los músicos experimentales principales de aquellos días"...

Independiente, sin fines de lucro, la revista artística fue publicada entre 1967 y 1973 por los profesores y alumnos de la Universidad de California, Davis, California dejando muestra del floreciente experimentalismo musical californiano del momento. Impresa dos veces al año en tiradas de 2.000 ejemplares, contiene entrevistas, partituras, ensayos, obras de arte, poesía y fotos de artistas y músicos como Morton Feldman, Robert Ashley, Pauline Oliveros, Harry Partch, Alvin Lucier, Steve Reich, Anthony Braxton, Nam June Paik y otros.

Un libro, editado por Larry Austin, Douglas Kahn y Nilendra Gurusinghe y publicado por la propia Universidad de California y el triple CD, editado por Pogus, que acompaña a esta publicación (y que ya se podia escuchar en la pagina de Ubuweb) sirven para hacer Source accesible al publico de hoy. A cada uno de los ejemplares de Source el libro dedica los siguientes capitulos:
